Gioia del Colle Primitivo

Donna Coletta

It is still uncertain when vine arrived in Puglia. We only know that in Gioia del Colle the monks found favorable conditions for the cultivation of the vine and from there it then spread throughout southern mainland Italy (especially in the Terra d'Otranto, now the provinces of Lecce, Brindisi, Taranto). The first certain testimonies date back to the 12th century when the Benedictines wrote about the Primitivo grape.

The rather short production cycle, with delayed budding and early ripening make it suitable for these areas, where spring frosts and abundant autumn rains are frequent.

In the cellar Primitivo makes very elegant wines. The color tends towards purplish, with a nose full of small black fruits. In the mouth it is full and balanced, with soft spicy notes.
